A Few Minutes with the Mighty Jon Voight

We've definitely got a one of the good guys on our side

Once upon a time, there was a man named Michael Moore. For far worse than better, he liked to get under people's skin, from local school board members to, quite honestly, just about anyone who merely happened to disagree with his (and only his) way of thinking. He released a few pieces of fiction posing as documentaries, proposed very few (if any) solutions to the problems he illustrated (or invented) in his movies, and became the darling of the cinematic world, even garnering enough recognition to be given a seat at the 2004 Democrat Convention next to former President Jimmy Carter. Needless to say, Michael Moore is not very popular among Republicans, conservatives and/or people who love the United States of America, warts and all.

Finally, though, along comes An American Carol from renowned film satirist David Zucker (Airplane!, the Naked Gun trilogy, Scary Movie 3 & 4), a pointed and hilarious spoof of Moore and a few of his zany buddies on the left, set for release on October 3rd. Modeled on the Charles Dickens holiday classic A Christmas Carol, a character named Michael -- ahem -- Malone gets visited by ghosts who teach him the true meaning of loving the USA.

Starring Kevin Farley, Kelsey Grammer, Dennis Hopper and a slew of other conservative-minded actors (and liberal ones, too), An American Carol also features Jon Voight, a man who has gone quite vocally on record lately in support of the United States, the war on terror and John McCain, not exactly the typical stuff of a Hollywood legend.

Voight even stopped by the McCain Victory 2008 headquarters in Burbank, CA to show his support of the cause and the many phone bank volunteers in the office, which is where I was lucky enough to ask the gracious iconoclast-in-the-making a few questions about An American Carol ...

Before we get going, Mr. Voight, a non-question because I just have to tell you how much I enjoyed your cameo in Tropic Thunder. Not exactly family-friendly, but I loved it.
(chuckles) Glad you liked it. Thank you.

How strange was it on the set of An American Carol, not to have to worry about actually expressing positive opinions of our country and/or President Bush?
It was a revelation, really, to be around so many like-minded people, people who understood the stakes of what's going on in this country. They were people who had actually done their homework and could discuss the issues of the day in an in-depth manner. However, it's not like that's what we were there to do. We were there to focus on the scenes, our characters and get our job done.

How surprised were you to see so many other conservative actors involved with the movie, especially such high-quality ones?
I was not surprised at all, basically because I knew a lot of them. There's a whole crowd of conservative actors out there, too, but they're just not as vocal. I'm vocal, but that's because I think we live in a precarious time.

In light of the success of conservative-themed movies like 300, The Dark Knight and, to a large degree, Iron Man, how much do you think audiences are ready to embrace An American Carol?
Well, we're about to find out soon, right? (chuckles) Actually, there's a whole lot of humor in the movie, for both sides to enjoy. It's going to be hard to resist.

The struggle for the soul of America is happening on many fronts, and that's how we need to fight it. At Modern Conservative, we have a full-spectrum approach and a generational outlook. We're not just trying to win on a few issues, we're trying to move the entire country in the right direction. And we need your help to do it!

There are many activist networks, but AnyStreet goes much deeper. State, county, and precinct. Street by street in neighborhoods across America.

Activist teams are forming in areas across the country. Get connected. Get active. Changing America starts on your street!

Protests and rallies serve a purpose, and they sure are fun...but they can only do so much. Without policy initiatives and plans for implementation, all that great energy can go to waste.

Our think tank has got just the ticket, producing nationwide campaigns with achievable goals...for real results.

For too long, the left has had its way with our culture, suffusing it with propaganda, revisionism, and ugliness.

We need to do more than just complain. We need to offer resources, alternative choices, and alternative art communities... more

Everyone talks about the need for more unity in the conservative movement. Well, we're here to help!

Get plugged in to the entire conservative universe!

To help keep you informed, we provide several news services. Modcon Central and our other blogs provide news, commentary, and provocative essays. Our headlines are hand-selected from the most interesting stories of the day. And of course, we have a forum where you can comment on what we've posted or add your own topics!

We're working now, behind the scenes, on the ultimate weapon in the war of ideas. A resource like nothing else.

In order to finish this, and to keep our operations moving forward, we need your help.
